Carol Reed...Director

(December 30 1906- April 26 1976)

Sir Carol Reed is famous mostly because of his films based on scripts by Graham Greene, of which The Third Man from 1949 is widely considered the best. The critics had begun to count him out in the late fifties and early sixties before his great comeback with Oliver! 1968 which finally gained him an Oscar. (He had been nominated twice before, in 1949 and 1950.)
